Lister Block, Hamilton

Dan Chalykoff Heritage Consultancy Project

Joan Burt and I saw this building and it broke our hearts. Owned by a large developer at the time, their apparent strategy was demolition by neglect. Where windows were shattered they were left unrepaired so birds and water were all over the top stories. We talked to local businesses, planners, and the City but no one believed in Hamilton or the possibilities for the Lister Block at that time.

We did preliminary feasibility studies as well but again, no economic justification meant no money meant no restoration or adaptive re-use. However, this one has a happy ending. In October of 2010 conservation work was completed by Clifford Masonry and the building is once again open for business. Magnificent building fully deserving of heroic efforts.
