I come from Scots, Bulgarian, and German roots. Soldiers, medics, merchants, and carpenters. And farmers. Spent my first eight years in towns like Rouyn-Noranda and Hearst. Moved to Oakville in 1967 and but for educational forays, have never left. For better or worse I’m not just from Oakville I’m of Oakville as I’m of our beloved Lake Ontario from here to the St. Lawrence and back.

I spent some seminal time at Queen’s University but buildings haunted me before Queen’s. Course work, the campus, and Kingston drove the message home and I changed gears: book learning made (some) way for a new love of hammers, planes, and levels: worked as a carpenter, started and ran two design/build firms, and read, read, read. I completed my architectural thesis at U of T when I was a forty-year-old Dad with a nine-person design/build firm. Some long nights and busy weekends to learn what I wanted. With help from the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada’s Syllabus Program.

When I’m not engaged as a dog-loving Dad, I’m ministering to moribund buildings. Other than that I’m writing novels, playing guitar and singing, skiing, or trying to avoid going to the gym. And reading. I live with one of the world’s most understanding women who married me and gave birth to two magnificently original daughters. We live in a century-old cottage in the old part of town.

Some of my (other) favourite things: Rachmaninov’s piano etudes, Steve Earle, Thomas Hardy, Rembrandt self-portraits, Bill Frisell, F. Scott Fitzgerald, the Cloisters, Mary Chapin Carpenter, the Frick, CCR, Musee D’Orsay, Led Zeppelin, Robert B. Parker’s Spenser novels, the Doors, Somerset House, the old reading room atop the Douglas Library, Red House Blues, and Evensong at Trinity Chapel.

L’Chaim.
